SHELLHARBOUR VILLAGE
Last weekend, my girlfriends and I stayed a couple of nights in Wollongong. We found ourselves Shellharbour Village for a spot of shopping. A quaint little village hidden away near the ocean front. Lovely boutiques dotted alongside cafes and restaurants on the main street.
Of notable mention is Harbour Rose (1/17 Addison Street, Shellharbour Village). Not only does Harbour Rose have beautiful clothing from sizes 8 - 20, they also have the coolest retro and vintage inspired everything! From vintage themed notebooks to hipflasks, shot glasses to shower caps and other knick-knacks. I could stay there for hours just picking through everything. Very retro. Very cool. Clothing from matching two-piece pyjamas to casual separates to gorgeous chiffon vintage inspired dresses such as this beautiful little number.
Owner, Donna, with 20 over years of retail experience stocks the store with things that she loves and is inspired by. She showed me cards by lalaland (www.lalalandshop.com.au). These cards carry original designs by artists, photographers and illustrators from Australia and abroad. From quirky to mystical to some with a strong Tim Burton flavour.
Rather than putting away these cards in a drawer and forgetting all about it, cardboard borders are sold separately to mount your cards up on the wall for display. How clever!
I could't resist the naughty little hip flask and just had to have one. Yay!
BULLI
Bulli is another interesting little town. First stop, Black Diamond Antiques & Collectable at 260 Princess Highway. This place looks as old as the antique it sells with cobwebs dancing in the breeze between the pieces of knick-knack in the window display.
Quick look around and it didn't take Brie long to find a handsome little hippopotamus which Rose christened Hugo.
Not to be outdone, I spied an adorable ceramic piggy bank looking as me longingly from the display window and knew at once he would be mine.
Across the street from the Bulli Family Hotel is the Victoria Street Restorations, suppliers of quality home restoration products from iron gates to door knobs and hinges. It is also a treasure trove of beautiful homewares and accessories. Open Wednesdays to Saturday, 9.30 am - 5pm. It is an Aladin's cave of weird and wonderful stuffs. Not to be missed.
THIRROUL
Our SOP (Standard operating procedure) at Thirroul is to start at the eco store, Ekho on one end of Lawrence Hargrave Drive, Thirroul (south bound side of traffic) and work our way down the street. There are quite a number of nice boutiques along both sides of the main street.
Nest Emporium and Oat & Honey are two of the best smelling stores ever. Don't leave without checking them out. I never leave empty handed at those two stores.
Scraggs on the beach (3/2 Raymond Road) is one of our sentimental favourite second-hand store. Great place to rummage through all the bits and bobs from different eras. We have many a funny memory having tried on a few very interesting retro outfits there in the past. Our last visit saw us nab a funky little green chiffon skirt which has been put to good use by one of our teenage girls as part of a fairy outfit to numerous dress up parties. I found a chic pair of heels from Andrea and Joen this time around. Perfect fit and feels so right but alas, although I am a lover of vintage clothes, I have not been able to make myself buy second hand shoes even though this one looked brand new.
Happy shopping next time you head south.
